A new teaser for the MPI-supported feature-length documentary Los Ultimos Frikis (translated The Last Freaks) was featured this week in Rolling Stone. The debut comes ahead of the film’s world premiere at the prestigious DOC NYC festival this Sunday at the SVA Theatre in New York.
Los Ultimos Frikis is a feature-length documentary about communist Cuba’s legendary heavy metal band Zeus—the most popular rock stars you’ve never heard of. Director Nicholas Brennan followed the band for 10 years, documenting their struggles to express themselves inside this closed society. Battling against the country’s Agency of Rock and the restrictions of its socialist model, frontman Diony Arce and his band of metalheads fight to realize their dreams of stardom despite the limitations thrown in their way.
The original score for the film comes from Dave Lombardo, drummer and co-founder of the metal band Slayer.
Brennan tells Rolling Stone, “This film is the culmination of a cross-border collaboration between Cuban and American filmmakers, musicians and artists who have worked together over the past decade to share this unheard story from Cuba with the world.”
