What can filmmakers create when they put new AI tools to work in the service of their own creative vision?

As new applications for artificial intelligence continue to emerge, members of MPI’s creative community expressed interest in learning more about its possibilities. In response, MPI launched the AI Short Film Lab. This month, eight selected MPI filmmakers gathered in Los Angeles for a two-day summit, where they received hands-on training and explored how the technology can support their work.

Award-winning MPI filmmaker Matthew Szewczyk leads the lab, drawing on his experience in traditional filmmaking and AI. The writer-director behind the MPI Original The Perfect One, Matthew, also heads a commercial film division at an AI-native film studio.

During the summit, the filmmakers put AI tools into practice as they began developing their projects. Most are creating proof-of-concept materials for existing feature scripts, using the technology to visualize scenes and creative worlds that can help them communicate their vision and pitch their projects more widely. Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and one-on-one sessions with Matthew, they explored new approaches to visual development, storyboarding, and bringing their ideas to the screen.

The summit was only the beginning. The filmmakers are now continuing to develop their projects and proofs of concept through five weeks of virtual mentorship with Matthew, receiving feedback and guidance as they navigate these evolving tools.
