MPI is now accepting applications for our fall 2020 cinematography workshop, Moving Picturecraft. Co-led by award-winning MPI filmmaker Benjamin Gaskell, the workshop educates filmmakers on how lighting, camera, and lens technologies can help them achieve their artistic intentions.
The workshop is designed for aspiring and working directors of photography (DPs) and directors. Attendees receive expert instruction from award-winning members of the American Society of Cinematographers, while getting hands-on experience with industry-standard camera and lighting systems.
During the workshop, filmmakers take a simple scene, such as “a couple arguing over their morning coffee,” design the lighting and camera movements, and then film the scene on a soundstage with state-of-the-art equipment. All filmmakers have one hour to run their “sets” as the cinematographer, giving them a sense of time and crew management. When not acting as the DP, they assist with other filmmakers’ scenes, experiencing various crew roles. At the end of the workshop, each filmmaker’s final product is reviewed and critiqued by the group.
Past participants have praised the workshop for giving them access to quality instructors, the ability to work with professional equipment, and providing a networking opportunity to meet future collaborators.
One participant wrote, “I learned more in five immersive days of the Moving Picture Institute’s Cinematography Workshop than I would have expected to learn over a full semester at a graduate film school.”

Please note, MPI continues to track Covid-19 and will adjust this workshop if needed to ensure the safety of our attendees and speakers.
