As exclusively reported in Variety, Vertical has acquired North American rights to MPI Original Films’ sci-fi thriller Motherland. Starring Miriam Silverman (Your Friends and Neighbors), Holland Taylor (The Morning Show), Néstor Carbonell (Shōgun), and introducing Emily Arancio, the film is set for release in select theaters and on demand on September 12, 2025.

Directed by Evan Matthews and written by Nicole Roewe (née Swinford), Motherland focuses on an alternate present society where the state frees parents from the burden of raising children, until a rule enforcer (Silverman) learns a shocking truth that sparks her rebellion.

“MPI Original Films is once again pleased to partner with Vertical Entertainment to bring audiences this gripping story that powerfully portrays the bonds of parenthood, the cost of control, and the courage to defy the system,” said producer Rob Pfaltzgraff, p.g.a. “Motherland combines a unique vision with commanding performances that will resonate with audiences long after the credits roll.”

“Evan’s world-building is as impressive in its attention to detail as it is disheartening in its plausibility. The excellent performances from the entire cast elevate the dystopian thriller narrative, and we look forward to presenting the film to audiences this September,” added Vertical SVP of Acquisitions Tony Piantedosi.

The film was produced by Summer Crockett Moore, Tony Glazer, Lana Link, p.g.a., and Rob Pfaltzgraff, p.g.a., with Nick Reid executive producing.

The deal was negotiated by Piantedosi and Manager of Acquisitions and Sales Rachel White on behalf of Vertical and by Pfaltzgraff on behalf of MPI Original Films.
