Congratulations to longtime MPI filmmaker Laura Waters Hinson whose documentary Street Reporter was recently named by Variety in its Top Five Oscar Predictions in the short documentary category. The film has had a successful film festival run, screening at top festivals around the country and winning several awards including the Audience Award for Best Short Documentary at the Austin Film Festival.

The doc tells the story of Sheila White who dreams of becoming a photojournalist and overcoming her life of homelessness. Yearning to make this change, she studies at a local university while completing homework late into the night at the women’s shelter. As a reporter investigating the story of “Tent City” for the local street paper, Sheila discovers the power of her voice as a community journalist and the re-humanizing effects of life’s most basic need: a place to call home.

Laura is an assistant professor in the Film and Media Arts Division at American University in Washington, DC. MPI has worked with Laura on a number of projects over the years including directing the MPI Original feature documentary Project Home as well as the MPI-supported docs Mama Rwanda and Dog Days. She also recently served as the instructor for MPI’s Documentary Storytelling Workshop.

Street Reporter is now available for consideration in the Academy Screening Room. Great work, Laura!
