This week, aspiring filmmakers came together in Washington, DC, for a masterclass dinner and networking evening hosted by MPI. The event offered a unique opportunity for emerging storytellers to connect with established professionals who’ve successfully navigated the world of independent film and gain insight into forging a meaningful path in film.
Headlining the evening was Elizabeth Mirzaei, an MPI filmmaker and Oscar-nominated documentarian, who gave a powerful talk titled “Taking the Leap into Film as a Career.” Drawing from her own experience creating award-winning documentaries on freedom, resilience, and underrepresented voices, Elizabeth spoke about how to break into the industry, build a sustainable creative life, and stay focused on purpose-driven storytelling.
Also in attendance were Austin and Meredith Bragg, known as The Bragg Brothers—fellow MPI filmmakers whose MPI Original feature Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game earned a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was named one of the top ten films of 2023 by The New Yorker’s Richard Brody. They engaged with attendees throughout the evening, offering advice on writing, directing, and building a sustainable creative career.
This gathering was more than just a dinner—it was a glimpse into the thriving community MPI is cultivating for filmmakers who want to tell bold stories about human freedom and elevate their craft.
