Last weekend marked one year since the MPI Original feature film Motherland was released across North America, bringing its story about state control, parenthood, and individual freedom to audiences nationwide.

Directed by MPI filmmaker Evan Matthews and written by MPI filmmaker Nicole Roewe, Motherland takes place in an alternate present where the state frees parents from the burden of raising children. Everything seems perfect until a rule enforcer learns a shocking truth that sparks her rebellion.

The film stars Tony Award winner Miriam Silverman (Your Neighbors and Friends, Landman), legendary Emmy winner Holland Taylor (The Morning Show, Hollywood), Emmy Award winner Néstor Carbonell (Shōgun, The Morning Show), and rising star Emily Arancio.

Before its release through Vertical, Motherland traveled the festival circuit, screening at 14 festivals across the country and earning 21 awards. Following its debut, Motherland also received national media attention. Screen Rant praised the film’s examination of state control, parenthood, and identity, writing that it “starts extremely relevant conversations about what causes economic inequity and how the state decides who has the right to raise children.” The New York Times later included Motherland among its “Five Science Fiction Movies to Stream Now.”

One year after its release, Motherland continues to give audiences a thought-provoking look at what can happen when the state gains greater control over some of the most personal decisions in people’s lives.
