The MPI Original feature narrative Motherland will have its highly anticipated world premiere on March 14 as an official selection at the renowned Omaha Film Festival. Celebrated for its commitment to spotlighting groundbreaking films and thought-provoking storytelling, this festival draws influential industry leaders and passionate audiences, making it the perfect stage for Motherland to debut.
Motherland’s star-studded cast includes Tony Award winner Miriam Silverman (The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window), legendary Emmy-winning actress Holland Taylor (The Morning Show, Hollywood), Emmy award winner Néstor Carbonell (Shōgun, The Morning Show), and newcomer Emily Arancio.
This 1984-esque sci-fi thriller is set in the Motherland, a state-run Children’s Center that raises all citizens, ensuring a fair upbringing and freeing parents from child-rearing burdens. This seemingly utopian system turns into a nightmare for a Motherland enforcer who uncovers the true identity of a young woman in her care. When the Center launches a program to combat population decline, she becomes determined to protect the young woman from becoming part of it. Defying the system she once upheld, the enforcer risks everything to save the girl—that is, if the Motherland doesn’t stop her first.
Motherland is a perfect example of the synergy between MPI’s core programs—MPI Original Films and the Rising Filmmaker Program. Our producers developed the concept with MPI filmmaker Nicole Roewe (née Swinford), tapped another member of our filmmaker network Evan Matthews to direct, and provided accounting internships, producing internships, director shadowing opportunities, and production assistant positions for almost a dozen MPI filmmakers.
