The MPI Original feature Kemba will screen at the Midwest Film Festival in Chicago on July 23, followed by a special virtual conversation with Kemba Smith Pradia, whose true story inspired the film, and Michelle West, whose story is also featured in the film. Together, they will reflect on their experiences, the power of second chances, and how storytelling can spark meaningful conversations about justice and criminal justice reform.

Kemba follows a college student whose life is forever changed after becoming entangled in her boyfriend’s drug operation, leading to a 24-year federal prison sentence despite never handling drugs herself. The film explores the unintended consequences of mandatory minimum sentencing laws and the resilience required to overcome injustice.

In January 2025, President Biden granted a full pardon to Kemba and executive clemency to Michelle, marking a significant milestone after decades of advocacy. Kemba spent years raising awareness about Michelle’s case while becoming one of the nation’s leading voices for criminal justice reform.

The screening will take place at the Ramova Theatre in Chicago at 5:00 p.m. CT.
