As exclusively announced in Variety, the MPI Original feature film Freedom Hair will screen as an official selection at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF) this June in Miami, Florida.

Based on a true story, the film stars Simona Brown (Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes) as Melony Armstrong, a determined mother who decides to start a natural hair braiding business to achieve financial independence. To realize her dream she must overcome unexpected obstacles imposed by a powerful cosmetology cartel and the State of Mississippi.

Movie Maker magazine recently included ABFF in its top 50 film festivals list, writing the fest is “[o]ne of the oldest and most prestigious festivals focused on Black artists…known for A-list guests, discovering new talents, and a strong industry presence.”

Freedom Hair is screening at festivals around the country, including two this past weekend at the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival and the Washington, DC International Film Festival.
