New Mexico has officially become the 37th state to remove occupational licensing requirements for hair braiding, marking a significant victory in the ongoing push for economic opportunity and entrepreneurial freedom. This achievement aligns with the powerful message of the MPI Original narrative feature Freedom Hair, a film that celebrates the fight for personal and professional freedom.

This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible momentum created by a special grassroots screening of Freedom Hair in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in February. The event was organized by the Institute for Justice, with Melony Armstrong, the film’s subject and executive producer, playing a pivotal role in energizing and participating in the coalition behind this effort.

Directed by Oscar-nominated writer-director Dianne Houston, the film tells the true story of Melony, a Mississippi mother who dreamed of starting her own natural hair braiding business. Her path was blocked by restrictive state laws and opposition from the cosmetology lobby, but she refused to back down. Melony’s inspiring journey showcases the power of resilience and determination in the fight for the right to work.
