Last week, the MPI Original documentary short A Clean Slate screened on the closing night of the Capital City Film Festival in Lansing, Michigan, capping off a dynamic week of films, performances, and discussions that explore the intersection of art and social change.

Developed through MPI’s 2021 Documentary Storytelling Workshop by MPI filmmaker Trần Hoàng Calvin, A Clean Slate follows the inspiring work of Shanyeill McCloud and Clean Slate Milwaukee, a nonprofit helping nonviolent, formerly incarcerated individuals expunge their records and re-enter society. This heartening documentary demonstrates how state and local governments can act as laboratories of democracy, pioneering bipartisan solutions for meaningful change.
