This week marks the second anniversary of the MPI and BET Original film Kemba, inspired by the true story of Kemba Smith Pradia.

Starring Nesta Cooper, the film follows a college student whose life unravels after she becomes involved with a man living a dangerous double life. Though she never handled or sold drugs herself, she is sentenced to prison under mandatory minimum laws for his crimes.

Following its release, MPI launched a strategic screening campaign, using the film to spark conversations about the consequences of mandatory minimum sentencing. More than 12,100 attendees participated in over 120 events across the country, helping build momentum that contributed to clemency victories—including a full pardon for Kemba and clemency for her close friend Michelle West, whom she met in prison and who was serving a similarly harsh sentence.
