The recent festival wins of the MPI Original Film A Piece of Cake, starring Rich Sommer (Mad Men), have caught the attention of film critic Richard Propes, founder and publisher of the online film review website The Independent Critic. Propes praises the film in his review stating, “A Piece of Cake is an adorable and hilarious delight from beginning to end, somehow simultaneously a family-friendly comedy with just a hint of dark undertones as Sommer’s ultimately loving dad increasingly goes out of his comfort zone to make sure his daughter has the birthday of her dreams even when a certain dream gets added at the last minute.”

Created by MPI filmmakers Austin and Meredith Bragg, A Piece of Cake follows a father on a high-stakes journey to secure the banned birthday cake decorations he promised his daughter. Propes pays homage to the film’s cast saying, “There’s heart and humor galore throughout A Piece of Cake and most of it comes courtesy of the spot-on chemistry between Sommer and gifted young actress Riona O’Donnell, whose mere smile would likely have me following a similar path as her father. Natalie Britton, as Claire, also shines throughout and helps to give the film its sentimental foundation.”

The film has been chosen as an Official Selection by three Oscar-qualifying film festivals—the Cleveland International Film Festival; the Indy Shorts International Film Festival, where it won the jury award for Best Comedy and the Audience Choice Award in Comedy; and the Tribeca Film Festival which also nominated the film for Best Narrative Short.

With a 3.5/4 star rating, Propes wraps his review with a nod to the film’s Indy Shorts win saying, “A Piece of Cake is an entertaining and deserving winner of this year’s top comedy prize.”
