More than 60 years after South Carolina prohibited minors from playing pinball, the state has finally removed the restriction from its books.
The change closes the chapter on a long-running debate over whether pinball is a game of chance or a game of skill, a debate that sits at the heart of the MPI Original feature Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game.
The film tells the true story of Roger Sharpe, whose advocacy helped change public perceptions of pinball during a time when many cities and states viewed the game as a form of gambling. As lawmakers and regulators reconsidered those assumptions, pinball gradually emerged from decades of restrictions and bans.
Today, families across South Carolina can enjoy the game without legal restrictions, marking the end of one of the country’s last remaining pinball holdovers.
