MPI is now accepting applications for the 2024 Short Film Lab. This comprehensive program provides filmmakers with hands-on training and mentoring to take their initial film concepts through the process of developing a producible short film script. Filmmakers accepted into the program receive fellowship grants and participate in screenwriting workshops followed by directing workshops.
After the workshop stage, at least one official selection is made. That filmmaker will receive a grant of $10,000 and the opportunity to develop their project with MPI further for potential production as an MPI Original Film.
Through this program, MPI produced A Piece of Cake by The Bragg Brothers, which premiered at festivals in 2020 and was nominated for Best Narrative Short at the Tribeca Film Festival. MPI has continued to work with the Braggs, who served as the writer/directors of the MPI Original Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game. The feature was released earlier this year on popular streaming platforms including Hulu and Apple TV and was recently hailed in The New Yorker as one of the top ten films of 2023.
Other projects developed in and selected for production from the Lab include Melons and Infraction.
Each year, MPI puts out a call for applications based on a specific theme. With so many problems in today’s world, there’s a worthy desire to create lasting solutions that work for everyone. But in the process, it’s easy to lose sight of what local communities and individuals truly need. To that end, we encourage our filmmakers to creatively consider our latest Short Film Lab theme: One Size Doesn’t Fit All.
There are countless directions in which you could take this prompt. The possibilities are endless, but this theme is the jumping off point.
Filmmakers can pitch a story in any genre, but keep in mind MPI prefers to produce hopeful films that inspire audiences. We are looking for powerful, uplifting stories where protagonists overcome obstacles to achieve their goals.
