We recently caught up with MPI intern Emily Rauch to discuss her experience on the sets of MPI Originals We’re Doing Good and Pinball. Emily served as a production assistant (PA) on the films through MPI’s Hollywood Career Launch Program, which places college students and recent graduates in production roles at major studios and with MPI Original Films.

Emily’s tasks as a PA included handling props, transporting talent and crew, acting as a runner, and ensuring health and safety protocols were followed.

This being Emily’s first time in this role, she spoke highly of the learning opportunities afforded to her during the productions. “It was a great experience working alongside people who were willing to teach me along the way,” she wrote. “Coming from outside the film industry, I appreciated those on set explaining the ropes to me without speaking down to me.”

One great piece of advice she received early on was to always be on the lookout for where she could be helpful rather than waiting to be told what to do. “Learning to be proactive about approaching the different departments and offering to help really improved my approach as a PA.”

Emily also recalled how the hands-on experience has given her even more admiration for the film industry. She writes, “There’s so much work that goes into a production, and so many things can potentially go wrong, so it really gave me an appreciation for what kind of talent and hard work is required to pull off a film or TV shoot.”

Are you a freedom-minded student or recent grad trying to break into the film industry? If so, we encourage you to apply for consideration to MPI’s Hollywood Career Launch Program! Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
