The MPI Original short A Piece of Cake will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this April in New York City. Founded by Robert De Niro, Tribeca is one of the world’s preeminent film festivals for independent filmmakers, receiving thousands of annual submissions.

Created by MPI filmmakers Austin and Meredith Bragg, A Piece of Cake stars Rich Sommer (GLOW, Mad Men) and is a funny, smart take on overregulation and the drug war. After disappointing his young daughter with another unfulfilled “daddy promise,” Jim (played by Sommer) vows to set things right by purchasing the small silver confectionery balls she wants sprinkled on her birthday cake. This errand proves to be a challenge as he learns the confections are banned in California. In an effort to keep his promise, Jim resorts to the underground world of illicit cake decorations where prices are high, smugglers are hardened, and police are on the lookout.

The film originated in MPI’s Concept Development Screenwriting Workshop where we worked with the Bragg Brothers to develop the script. To prepare for production, the Braggs participated in MPI’s Directing Workshop and Moving Picturecraft Workshop on cinematography.

The Braggs, who work as video producers for Reason TV, are an award-winning writer/director team whose work has been seen by millions. Together they won the 2016 HP Masters of Short Film competition at the Cannes Film Festival, received a documentary award from George Lucas, and have been nominated for a National Magazine Award.
