Melony Armstrong, the subject of the forthcoming MPI Original Film Freedom Hair: The Melony Armstrong Story, was recently featured in the “Celebration of Black History” series presented by WTVA News. The segment highlights Melony’s fearless fight for natural hair braiders and natural hair care stylists in Mississippi and beyond.

Freedom Hair is based on Melony’s inspiring, true story of a mother who works at a shelter for battered women who decides to start a natural hair braiding business to achieve financial independence for herself and others. To do so she must overcome unexpected obstacles imposed by a powerful cartel and the state of Mississippi.

MPI has attached Oscar-nominated Dianne Houston to write and direct. Principal photography on Freedom Hair is expected to begin in late 2021. Check back here for updates on the film.
