Kemba Smith Pradia, the subject and executive producer of the MPI and BET Original feature film Kemba, joined CBS Detroit last night to discuss the movie and her advocacy. During the interview, Kemba emphasized how the film has helped illuminate her story and those of others whose lives have been devastated by mandatory minimum sentencing. She also discussed the ongoing fight for clemency for her friend Michelle West, who was depicted in the film. Despite being a survivor of intimate partner violence, Michelle is serving life without parole for her first and only offense due to mandatory minimums.
Kemba will take part in a special screening and discussion, along with the film’s director Kelley Kali, this evening at 6 p.m. at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Learn more about the event here.
