Freedom Hair, an MPI Original narrative feature directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Dianne Houston, recently received both the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature and the Jury Award at the Teaneck International Film Festival (TIFF) in Teaneck, New Jersey. Renowned for its socially conscious programming, TIFF showcases a dynamic mix of films—from powerful features to thought-provoking documentaries and shorts—that spark dialogue and inspire meaningful change.
Following the screening, attendees participated in a discussion featuring Melony Armstrong, the film’s subject and executive producer; actor Jeremie Harris; and New Jersey State Senator Angela McKnight, a champion of workplace fairness initiatives such as the CROWN Act.
Freedom Hair sheds light on the inspiring true story of Melony, a Mississippi mother who set out to start a natural hair braiding business but faced resistance from the cosmetology lobby and restrictive state laws. Starring Simona Brown (Behind Her Eyes), the film highlights Melony’s legal battle to overcome these challenges and achieve her entrepreneurial dream.
