Freedom Hair screened as an official selection this past Friday at the prestigious American Black Film Festival (ABFF) in Miami, Florida. The festival is the premier event for empowering Black artists and showcasing diverse entertainment content by and for individuals of African descent.

Executive producer and subject Melony Armstrong, lead actress Simona Brown, and producer and MPI senior vice president Lana Link participated in a powerful post-screening discussion moderated by Kemba director Kelley Kali. During the panel, the women discussed the burdensome obstacles that occupational licensing requirements create for hair braiders, Melony’s experience on set, and what it was like for Simona to work with Freedom Hair’s Oscar-nominated director Dianne Houston.

Freedom Hair continues its successful festival run, screening in multiple cities this summer. The film will screen next at the Filmteenth Film Festival this Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 7:30 p.m. at the Landmark Theatre in Pasadena, California. Director Dianne Houston and actresses Simona Brown and Erica Tazel will join several members of the film’s crew at the event. Purchase tickets here.

This Wednesday, June 19, 2024, the film will screen at the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival’s (FLIFF) Juneteenth Mini Film Festival at 6:00 p.m. at the Savor Cinema in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, followed by a Q&A with Melony Armstrong. Buy your tickets here.

Freedom Hair will also screen at the African Film Festival on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 6 p.m. at the Pan-African Connection in Dallas, TX. Purchase tickets here.
