The MPI Original feature film Freedom Hair, starring Simona Brown (Behind Her Eyes, The Night Manager), Jeremie Harris (Legion, A Walk Among the Tombstones), and Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill, Chicago P.D.), will premiere Friday, August 30, across your favorite streaming platforms including Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Google Play and in select theaters. The North American rights for the film were acquired by the leading indie film distributor Vertical Entertainment. Written and directed by Oscar-nominated Dianne Houston, Freedom Hair is based on the inspiring true story of Melony Armstrong. The film centers around Melony, a determined mother who starts a natural hair braiding business to achieve financial independence but faces unexpected challenges from a powerful cosmetology cartel and the State of Mississippi.

Freedom Hair has enjoyed tremendous success on the festival circuit, screening at numerous prestigious festivals and earning a variety of accolades. Notably, it won the Grand Prize, Best Narrative Feature, and Best Original Musical Score at the Anthem Film Festival, Best Feature Film at the Charlotte Black Film Festival, and Most Inspirational Film at both the Sedona International Film Festival and the International Christian Film and Music Festival. Additionally, Oscar-nominated writer-director Dianne Houston received the Best Director Award at the African Film Festival.

The film recently screened at the Oscar-qualifying Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and it has been nominated for Best Feature at the Black Film Festival of New Orleans in New Orleans, Louisiana.
