The MPI Original feature Freedom Hair recently screened at the Boys & Girls Club of North Mississippi in Tupelo, continuing the film’s reach into communities across the country.

The film tells the true story of Melony Armstrong, a Mississippi mother who sets out to build a natural hair braiding business and create new opportunities for herself and others, only to face unexpected barriers from industry gatekeepers and state regulators.

The screening brought that story to a group of young women at the club, where a Braiding Academy created in partnership with Armstrong is giving students hands-on experience in the craft, connecting what they see on screen to real possibilities in their own lives.

Freedom Hair is available to watch on Starz, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Google Play. If you’re interested in bringing the film to your own community, MPI’s impact producers can help you host a screening and lead a conversation around its themes. Learn more here.
