MPI is now accepting applications for its 2023 Short Film Lab. This comprehensive program provides filmmakers with hands-on training and mentoring to take their initial film concepts through the process of developing a producible short film script.

Filmmakers accepted into the program receive fellowship grants and participate in screenwriting workshops followed by directing workshops. After the workshop stage, MPI may choose to acquire one to three scripts to produce as MPI Original Films in 2023 and/or further engage a select number of filmmakers with additional development opportunities. Filmmakers whose scripts are acquired often direct their projects and continue to be part of the entire production process, which is funded by MPI.

Each year, MPI puts out a call for applications based on a specific theme. With the economy and rising prices on everyone’s minds, we encourage filmmakers to creatively consider our latest Short Film Lab theme: The Value of a Dollar.

There are countless directions in which you could take this prompt—from pure grit to cryptocurrency. The possibilities are endless, but this theme is your jumping off point. You’re free to pitch a story in any genre, but keep in mind we prefer to produce hopeful films that inspire audiences.

Through this program, MPI produced A Piece of Cake by The Bragg Brothers, which was nominated for Best Narrative Short at the Tribeca Film Festival. MPI has continued to work with the Braggs, and we are currently in the festival run of their first feature film, the MPI Original Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game starring Mike Faist (West Side Story) and Crystal Reed (Teen Wolf).

Other projects developed and selected for production in the Lab include Melons and Infraction

Click here to submit your concept to the 2023 Short Film Lab. Application requirements include a résumé and a completed questionnaire detailing your concept and explaining how your project relates to MPI’s mission and the theme above. Applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. (PT) on Monday, December 5, 2022.
