Last weekend, the MPI Original feature narrative Freedom Hair screened at the Anthem Film Festival (AFF), attended by more than 2,500 people in Las Vegas, Nevada. The film received a standing ovation and was awarded the festival’s Grand Prize as well as Best Narrative Feature and Best Original Musical Score. Melony Armstrong, the executive producer and subject of Freedom Hair, who was on-hand to accept the awards, was also honored with the Hero Award for her tireless efforts to bring economic opportunity to thousands of women in Mississippi.

Freedom Hair stars Simona Brown (Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes) as Melony, a determined mother who starts a natural hair braiding business to achieve financial independence but faces unexpected challenges from a powerful cosmetology cartel and the State of Mississippi.
