A MOVEMENT BEGINS

In 2005, the nonprofit Moving Picture Institute (MPI) was founded with a bold vision: to empower filmmakers who tell stories that champion freedom and individual rights by offering grants, mentorship, and training. The organization quickly grew into a trusted network of directors, screenwriters, crew members, and industry executives who share MPI’s values and support one another. That collaborative spirit still defines MPI today and is now a movement.

EMPOWERING PRO-FREEDOM FILMMAKERS

MPI’s Rising Filmmaker Program is a one-of-a-kind incubator that supports emerging creators and executives as they find their path in the entertainment industry. Filmmakers say they gain critical, hands-on experiences that are more transformative than years in film school working on MPI Original films and from MPI’s offerings—such as the Short Film Lab, Production Lab, and First Feature Lab. Our network includes Academy Award nominees, Emmy winners, and creative leaders across the industry. This community is a fellowship of artists united by the belief that stories can renew culture and keep freedom alive, one film at a time.

BUILDING A STUDIO DEDICATED TO FREEDOM

MPI Original Films is an independent film production company developing and producing movies about human freedom. Acclaimed projects such as Miss Virginia, Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game, Kemba, Freedom Hair, and Motherland showcase MPI’s ability to tell powerful stories across genres. Our films reach wide audiences through screenings at respected festivals, impact campaigns, and releases on streaming platforms such as Apple TV, Hulu, Starz, and Prime Video.

LOOKING AHEAD

MPI is poised to scale its impact promoting freedom through film with enhanced Rising Filmmaker Program offerings such as our First Feature Lab—and with bold, large-scale MPI Original films that will bring powerful stories to the screen. Currently in production is One Second After, a gripping survival thriller that explores themes of community, national security, and self-government after an electromagnetic pulse disables all technology across America. Our development slate includes In Order to Live, based on North Korean defector and human-rights activist Yeonmi Park’s extraordinary escape from oppression. As we celebrate 20 years of culture-shaping films and developing pro-freedom filmmakers, please consider making a tax-deductible gift for our 20th anniversary!
