The MPI Original feature narrative film Freedom Hair was selected as an official selection at the Oscar-qualifying Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (MVAAFF), with the film set to screen August 2, 2024, at 2 p.m. in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. It is an honor to screen at MVAAFF, which has screened and promoted some of the most outstanding and emerging feature, documentary, and short films produced by and starring African Americans from across the world. The film’s Oscar-nominated writer-director, Dianne Houston, will be in attendance for the event. Secure your ticket here and enjoy the show!

Based on an inspiring true story, Freedom Hair stars Simona Brown (Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes) as Melony, a determined mother who starts a natural hair braiding business to achieve financial independence but faces unexpected challenges from a powerful cosmetology cartel and the State of Mississippi.
