Yesterday, the MPI Original feature narrative film Freedom Hair won two awards at the 4th Annual Greenwood Film Festival, a leading Black film festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dianne Houston, the film’s Oscar-nominated writer-director, received the Outstanding Director award, and the second award recognized excellence in Cinematography.

Based on an inspiring true story, Freedom Hair stars Simona Brown (Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes) as Melony, a determined mother who starts a natural hair braiding business to achieve financial independence but faces unexpected challenges from a powerful cosmetology cartel and the State of Mississippi.
