This summer, MPI welcomed Jacqueline Duarte, a Communication major with a minor in Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California, to its Hollywood Career Launch Program (HCLP). This selective initiative is designed to prepare the next generation of filmmakers by offering hands-on experience, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. HCLP participants gain hands-on experience on film sets, take part in educational workshops, and attend exclusive events through the Gold Rising talent development program, including those hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Jacqueline, whose passion for film stems from her love of storytelling and its power to connect people, embraced the program’s unique opportunities. She gained invaluable experience on the set of an MPI Original short film, immersing herself in a professional production environment and learning the collaborative skills essential to the craft. The program also included the Summer Intern Summit and discussions with industry professionals, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to succeed in the film industry.

In an interview, Jacqueline reflected on her time in the program, sharing how it not only deepened her appreciation for storytelling but also helped her refine her approach to filmmaking.

What are the highlights of your MPI production internship?

During my MPI internship through the Hollywood Career Launch Program, I had the opportunity to work on the set of an MPI Original short film, immersing myself in the fast-paced, hands-on environment of professional filmmaking. This experience not only enhanced my practical knowledge but also helped me build supportive connections with fellow interns and MPI filmmakers. Working with Mark Wheeler at Pathfinder Media was a pivotal moment in my journey. Under his guidance, I explored various narrative techniques and strategies, discovering innovative ways to shape my stories with greater depth and precision. This mentorship honed my storytelling skills and provided a clearer understanding of how to effectively utilize resources—from visual elements to script nuances—to bring ideas to life.

MPI’s Rising Executives Summit, Summer Intern Summit, and Film+Freedom series also offered exceptional opportunities to connect with peers, discuss career aspirations, and explore the steps needed to achieve them. Engaging in discussion panels provided deep insights into industry best practices, strategies for professional growth, and actionable advice on navigating the film industry. These experiences gave me a clearer vision of my goals and practical guidance for advancing my career in entertainment.

What knowledge have you gained through the MPI program that you will carry with you throughout your career?

One of the most valuable lessons I will carry from MPI’s HCLP, especially through my work with Pathfinder Media, is how to professionally review and develop pitches for established writers, directors, authors, and producers. Acting as a liaison between executive teams to meet strategic objectives was a significant step in my growth toward professional producing. Transitioning from student filmmaking to a professional level, I learned the importance of bridging communication between creative and executive teams. This experience provided me with essential skills that will allow me to contribute confidently to professional productions and enhance my readiness for a successful career in film and media.

You’ve had the opportunity to work on the set of an MPI Original film. Could you tell us about your experience? Did working in this professional production environment help you gain confidence on set?

Working on the set of an MPI Original film was an incredible experience that allowed me to witness true professionalism and efficiency. The camaraderie among the crew highlighted the joy we bring to our craft as passionate filmmakers. I was especially grateful for the willingness of everyone on set to offer guidance and support, helping me create lasting connections that I know will be instrumental in my career. The level of professionalism on set was extraordinary. Each take was carefully planned to minimize repetition, and handling film stock required precise, cautious attention, emphasizing the importance of every shot. Even the director took the time to share valuable advice, helping me progress toward my goals. Altogether, this experience gave me newfound confidence and reinforced my commitment to becoming a professional in the film industry.

How has your experience with MPI positioned you for success in your career?

Through my placement at Pathfinder Media, I experienced a professional filmmaking environment beyond the scope of student projects. While student films are fulfilling, working in a high-stakes, real-world environment introduced me to the passion, dedication, and precision required for professional productions. Collaborating with admired professionals and witnessing their commitment to quality gave me a deep appreciation for the level of detail and expertise needed to bring a story to life. Observing the workflow and decision-making of seasoned professionals inspired me to set higher standards for myself and approach projects with renewed focus. Learning to develop pitches, refine story concepts, and approach storytelling strategically has equipped me with a skill set that will be instrumental in my future projects and career.

Working alongside people dedicated to the craft reinforced the importance of maintaining these values as I move forward in my career. The relationships I built through MPI continue to inspire me, and I am grateful for the network and guidance that will be instrumental as I advance professionally.
